The parents of the baby girl belong to a village in Amravati district of Vidarbha. The 23-year-old mother was shown her specially challenged child only this afternoon in presence of a psychiatrist. The father and grandmother were shown the child two days ago. Although, they were shocked, they had decided to accept God’s will and upbring the child.

The baby suffered from a disease known as Harlequin Ichthyosis. The congenital disorder was highly severe in the child as she was not only born with hard skin, but her internal organs were visible. Her ears were covered, and the eyelids were hardly opening for eyeball to emerge out. (ALSO READ: All you need to know about ‘Harlequin’ baby born in a farmer’s family in Nagpur)

According to senior doctors of the hospital, the disease could not be identified as the family, hailing from a poor farming background, were not able to bring the mother regularly for check-ups. “Even otherwise skin disorders, especially Harlequin Ichthyosis, cannot be picked up on conventional ultrasonography,” Dr Mitra said while speaking to Hindustan Times.

The case of Harlequin grabbed the attention in the nation, as it was for the first time such a disorder was reported in India. On social media, it turned into a point of conversation, with people expressing sympathy towards the newborn and her parents.
