In Tamil Nadu, which will go to polls on May 16, there has been a spike in the number of election candidates with criminal records

Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Tamil Nadu Election Watch. An analysis of the affidavits filed by 997 candidates from major recognised political parties by the ADR and Tamil Nadu Election Watch also shows that 157 of them have serious criminal cases related to murder, attempt to murder, theft, crime against women, pending against them.

“Out of the 997 candidates analysed, 553 are crorepatis. 32 from INC, 64 from BJP, 156 from AIADMK, 133 fielded by DMK, 72 from Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and 57 DMDK candidates have declared assets worth Rs 1 crore and above in their affidavits,” a survey by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said.

Five candidates — T Ramachandran (CPI), KPP Samy (DMK), R Hariharan (PMK), R Kalidass (PMK) and M Palaniyandi (DMK) — have charges related to murder against them. Eight candidates have charges related to crimes against women.

Dr Sudarshan Padmanabhan, coordinator for TN Election Watch, said the high number of candidates with criminal charges points to a lack of governance. “A candidate with a criminal charge has 22% more chances of getting elected. In a constituency with lower socio-economic strata, which faces law and order issues, a powerful goon has more control than the state machinery. These are the people who are elected and in many cases, they have a criminal charge,” said this academician from IIT Madras.
