Budhia was sold off by his mother for Rs 800 to a vendor. However, Das, a judo trainer, rescued the little boy and took him to the coaching centre. After that “historic run”, Budhia went on to participate in 48 marathons but as soon as media started reporting about his victories, the child welfare department temporarily barred Budhia from running in marathons and he was later sent to the sports hostel.

‘Marathon prodigy’  Budhia now lives a very ordinary life like 150-odd children at the Kalinga stadium hostel in Bhubaneswar. His daily routine includes getting up at 6am, hours of rigorous sessions, and 1-2 hours of conditional training per day. Today, all he aspires for is an Olympics medal. He and his mentor-cum-coach Biranchi Das, who was murdered in 2008, had dreamt of winning one together.

2. At the age of five, Budhia ran a distance of 65 kilometers from Puri to Bhubaneshawar

3. The entire distance of 65 kilometers was covered by Budhia in 7 hours and 2 minutes flat! Yes, that’s right.
